Shandong University, under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, is a key comprehensive university with a long history, a variety of disciplines, strong academic strength, and distinctive characteristics, which has great influence both at home and abroad. Shandong University is a member university of Project 211 and Project 985, two national key construction projects to support the development of high-quality universities. Shandong University ranked 11th nationwide in CWUR World University Ranking 2018/2019. In the general university ranking performed by the Chinese University Alumni Association (CUAA), Shandong University ranked number 14 among Top 100 Chinese universities in 2010. It reached the 11th highest score in the teaching category of this ranking. For the last ten years, Shandong University has been continuously ranked among the top 10 universities nationwide in terms of the number of publications included in the Science Citation Index.
Shandong University is one of the initiative universities of modern Chinese higher education. Its medical school, established in 1864, signified the beginning of modern Chinese higher education. Its main body, Shandong Imperial College (Shandong Da Xue Tang) established in 1901, was the second national university in China, only after the Imperial University of Peking. Moreover, it was the first university to be established and run in accordance with a chartered constitution.
The growth of the university over the years has seen SDU rise to the forefront of many fields in China. In the 1930s and 1950s, when Shandong University was located in Qingdao, it was the home to many nationally famous scholars who paved the way for great success especially in the fields of literature and history. Up to this day, Shandong University is well-known for its strong liberal arts programs, and published the highly reputable academic journal Literature, History & Philosophy.
About 1500 international students from about 40 countries come to study at Shandong University each year. An international student population numbering more than 1000 can be found on campus at any given time during the semester. Most of these international students come from Asian and African countries, but there are also students from Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Since 1980, Shandong University has received more than 10,000 students from over 60 countries. Popular study subjects are Chinese language and culture, but also economics and medicine. Furthermore, Shandong University participates in international short term exchange programs and receives approximately 2500 international student visitors for such programs per year.
Shandong University has eight campuses, all but two of which are not located in the provincial capital city of Jinan. The newest of these campuses is located to the northeast of the port city of Qingdao.
About Shandong University Qingdao Campus
Construction of the Qingdao Campus started in March 2011 and the first development phase was inaugurated in September 2016. The campus is located north of Qingdao City in Aoshanwei Town. The campus site is immediately adjacent to the seashore of Aoshan Bay and the coastal highway. The total palnning area covers about two million square meters, 43 percent of which are included in the first construction phase.
About the Institute of School of Political Science and Public Administration of Shandong University
School of Political Science and Public Administration(SPSPA) of Shandong University founded in 1960，covers 2 general academic subjects: political science and public management. Now, the SPSPA has 4 academic departments--Political Science, International Politics, Public Administration and Scientific Socialism, and 9 research centers, including Institute of Contemporary Socialism, Center for European Studies, Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Institute of Political Party and Institute of Public Policy. At present, there are 92 full-time members, among them are 72 teaching staffs including 29 professors, 29 associate professors and 14 lecturers.
There are more than 2000 students studying in the School’s BA, MA，MPA and PhD programs. The SPSPA currently runs PhD programs in sub-disciplines including International Politics, Party Politics, Political Theory, Scientific Socialism Study and Administration management; MA programs in all sub-disciplines under the general academic subject of political science. In addition, it also runs MA program in Public Administration as well as the MPA program. At the BA level, the SPSPA offers 5 specialty programs．SPSPA has made remarkable achievements in this regard in recent years. Over the past years, the SPSPA has established its leading position in China as well as abroad in areas of specialties such as Chinese Political Thoughts, European Politics and Society, Environment Politics, Regional Politics, Party Politics and Contemporary Socialism Study.
About the Institute of Governance of Shandong University
Located on the Qingdao campus of Shandong University, the Institute of Governance was formally launched in 2017. It builds on strong foundations of international collaboration with leading research universities in the U.S. and Europe. The Institute has a significant social survey component and promotes quality research on major aspects of governance in China from a comparative and global perspective.
